First Amendment Under Fire in the Classroom

Oh boy, here we go again . . . Perhaps you remember the song from Crosby, Stills, and Nash called “Teach the Children Well.” Sadly, today, we are not focusing on teaching or educating our children, but rather indoctrinating them as the elitists of academia and culture demand. I often share with people that the most important elected position in America is not a president, senator, congressman, or governor . . . but, rather, it is a member of the school board.

Here, again, we have evidence as to why. As reported by Townhall:

“A teacher at West Point High School in Virginia was fired recently over his religious objections to using male pronouns when referring to a student who is biologically female but identifies as male. 

The West Point School Board unanimously voted 5-0 Thursday to dismiss 47-year-old French teacher Peter Vlaming following a four-hour hearing. They argued that he was in “willful violation of school board policy.” 

“We do not and cannot tolerate discrimination in any form, or actions that create a hostile environment for any member of our school family,” they said in a statement. “Mr. Vlaming was asked repeatedly, over several weeks and by multiple administrators, to address a student by the pronouns with which this student identifies. The issue before us was not one mistaken slip of the tongue. Mr. Vlaming consistently refused to comply going forward — including in a statement made at the hearing — a willful violation of school board policy.”

Vlaming cited his Christian faith and told his superiors that he was willing to use the student’s name and simply avoid using feminine pronouns but he says the school rejected that compromise.

“That discrimination then leads to creating a hostile learning environment. And the student had expressed that. The parent had expressed that,”

West Point schools Superintendent Laura Abel said regarding Vlaming’s insistence on avoiding the student’s preferred pronouns. “They felt disrespected.”

First of all, let’s be reminded that gender dysphoria is classified as a mental condition by the American Psychiatric Association. It is defined as “the condition of feeling one’s emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one’s biological sex.” In layman’s terms, gender dysphoria is an individual’s decision to deny the science behind their true biological identity or sex, of which God created two — male and female.

But what is most disturbing is that we all must now be forced to play along with this little game . . . or else. So, what this case shows is that the teacher, Mr. Peter Vlaming, has lost his own first amendment rights to speech and expression, not to mention freedom of religion. He is supposed to go along with this charade. He was not fired due to poor performance as a teacher. He was fired because a group of ideologues on a school board deem indoctrination and ideological subjugation is more important than educating a child.

Telling the truth and referring to someone based upon their biological sex, identity is now determined to be creating a hostile environment and being disrespectful? This reminds me of the teacher in North Carolina who punished a child for referring to her as “ma’am.” We shared that story with y’all, as well.

This is why we have an education system that is lacking. We are too concerned with feelings and emotions instead of teaching. We are too focused on cultural indoctrination rather than science. How interesting that the progressive socialist left accepts science only when it fits their perceived, or desired ideological agenda.

Mr. Vlaming did nothing wrong, he referred to a student based upon who they are . . . not the mental condition being experienced. If I, all of a sudden, want to identify as Shaka Zulu, and someone does not refer to me as Mr. Zulu, should I sue them? How abjectly absurd! To me, Mr. Vlaming has a serious legal case that he should pursue. Why must anyone be forced to identify someone based on their feelings and emotions? Especially when that identification defies science, truth? Are we now supposed to be a society held hostage by individual whims, mental conditions?

If you anatomically have certain parts, well, that would tend to define your gender, your sex, to the average person. How is it that we have come to a point in our American society that we are all supposed to play along with someone else’s fantasy . . . and be punished for not doing so.

Growing up we used to play Cowboys and Indians, and I liked being the Lone Ranger, who was actually modeled after a black man, Bass Reeves. However, today I do not go around calling myself Bass Reeves, and if I did folks would think something wrong with me. Again, would it be right to demand others to call me Bass Reeves, just because I wanted to be him?

I am sorry, but the case of Mr. Peter Vlaming is just so very wrong. The fact that there is a school board making a policy and issuing decisions based upon an emotional mental condition, and not scientific fact, is disturbing. It is not discriminatory, disrespectful, nor hostile for someone to address a person as they have been created . . . not based upon what they wish they could be. Common sense would dictate that if we go down this road, it does not end well.

I am sure there are going to be plenty of haters come out of the woodwork. Well, make sure you yell at ol’ Bass Reeves, that is who I am feeling like today . . . a Lone Ranger for common sense!
