I think the title of this missive is rather self-explanatory, but it just may not be about what you think. Yes, recently we had the dubious assertion by New York’s Governor Cuomo that our beloved Constitutional Republic, America, was not always that great. Yes, this nation, that has been a beacon for individual liberty, and freedom, has “not been that great.”
You can always tell when these progressive socialist leftists know that they are wrong. Their explanations — read walk backs — are weak and absurd. Needless to say, Cuomo, in his attempt to appease the far left, went way too far, and chances are he may never recover. Well, let me rephrase that, he may never recover well enough to run for President. I am quite sure there are enough in New York City who would fully embrace Gov. Cuomo’s insidious, and disrespectful, statement — namely one Bill DeBlasio.
However, what should really cause Governor Cuomo concern — and in a big way — is a current lawsuit in which he is engaged. As reported by the Daily Caller:
“The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) defended the National Rifle Association (NRA) by opposing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s attempts to put the gun advocacy group out of business. The ACLU submitted an amicus brief in federal court on Saturday, weighing in on the ongoing battle between the Democrat and the NRA. The NRA filed a lawsuit against Cuomo and the state’s financial regulatory bureau in July, contending that the agency instituted a “blacklisting campaign” by threatening insurers and financial institutions that associate with the organization. The bureau warned that by continuing to work with the NRA, banks and insurance companies could face regulatory action. The NRA has subsequently been deprived of basic insurance and may be “unable to exist as a not-for-profit or pursue its advocacy mission.” While the ACLU has disagreed with the NRA on the meaning of the Second Amendment, the friend-of-the-court brief supported the NRA on behalf of the First. “Those allegations [made by the NRA] represent a blatant violation of the First Amendment,” the ACLU states. “Although public officials are free to express their opinions and may condemn viewpoints or groups they view as inimical to public welfare, they cannot abuse their regulatory authority to retaliate against disfavored advocacy organizations and to impose burdens on those organizations’ ability to conduct lawful business.”
Now, in full disclosure, I am a sitting Board member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). There are many of you who may be perplexed by the amicus brief filed by the ACLU to support the NRA. I am not. It’s all because of one simple word: precedent. If Governor Cuomo is able to leverage the intimidating power of government to destroy a civil rights advocacy group, for that is truly what the NRA is, where does that end? Who is to say that a Republican Governor could not take the same action against a left-leaning issue advocacy group, let’s say, Planned Parenthood, to put them out of business?
And make no mistake, Governor Cuomo used coercion, threats of fines, and mafia-style tactics to undermine financial institution support to the NRA in the State of New York. I find it very interesting, and hypocritical, since it was in New York, in 1871, that the NRA was incorporated. Its first president was former Union General Ambrose Burnside, and the impetus behind the association’s forming was to improve rifle marksmanship. However, the NRA soon became the nation’s first, foremost, civil rights organization as it fought to ensure recently freed slaves were entitled to their Second Amendment right — after all, they were indeed citizens.
Isn’t it interesting that Gov. Cuomo is fighting against the organization, NRA, that supported blacks being armed to defend themselves against the coercion, threats, and intimidation of an organization created by the Democrat party — the Ku Klux Klan. The very same NRA that was incorporated in New York state. My, I guess some things never change when it comes to who stands for individual liberty, freedom, and the right to protect and defend themselves — as opposed to the same ol’ group fighting against those very rights, freedoms: the Democrats.
The ACLU is wise to recognize that Gov. Cuomo is flat-out wrong in this case. But, it’s not that the ACLU has suddenly found an affinity for the NRA. Quite the contrary. They just do not want Cuomo’s illegal, and illicit, actions coming back to assail the left. The NRA has not broken any law, rule, or regulation. If Gov. Cuomo does not like the fact that the NRA exists, well, that is a personal problem. Gov. Cuomo has evidenced himself as some kind of elected thug by trying to destroy the nation’s oldest civil rights organization by sending out his financial services regulators into the free market place to issue threats. My, some things never change when it comes to standing for individual liberty, freedom, and the right to protect and defend themselves -- as opposed to the same ol' group fighting against those very rights, freedoms: the Democrats Click To Tweet
Why? Why does the progressive socialist left want the NRA gone? It’s simple: this organization is the nation’s most powerful constitutional, conservative, grassroot,s organization — solely dedicated to the defense of the right that guarantees our other rights — to keep and bear arms, a right that shall not be infringed. The NRA was mocked when it came out early to endorse Donald Trump for president in 2016. They are mocked no more, they are feared. If the progressive socialist left is to be successful in the “fundamental transformation” of America — meaning turning America into a Marxist/Socialist state — that pesky Second Amendment thing has to go away . . . just as the folks in Venezuela have no means to defend themselves against the socialist state. The left cannot have the NRA, and armed citizens, roaming about, denying them their goal, objective. The left needs disarmed subjects who then can be intimidated by Antifa, or the other “brown shirts” of the new American Democratic Socialists.
Will the ACLU face a backlash? Of course they will. Leftists are political cannibals who eat, as their own, any that do not march in lock step. But, kudos to the ACLU, in this case, to recognize the lasting effects this decision by Gov. Cuomo could have. First of all, the left — mainly Michael Bloomberg — needs to know that they will never defeat the NRA. The NRA is its membership, and its membership are everyday Americans. Secondly, even if the NRA goes down, something else would arise in its place. Americans will never be forced into submission by the whims of socialists.
Never forget, the shot that was fired, “heard ’round the world” was all about disarming Americans, April 21, 1775. Two hundred and forty-three years later, the left has now become the new Redcoats, but the result will be the same . . . they lose!
