I remember the 1979 James Bond film called “Moonraker,” starring Roger Moore. If you do not recall that movie, it was the one with the infamous character Jaws, played by Richard Kiel. The antagonist in the film, Hugo Drax, had a diabolical plan to destroy life on earth and start anew with a genetically engineered master race. It was kinda like Drax saw himself as a reincarnated maniacal Noah who had developed pairs of culturally diverse, perfect individuals to re-populate earth. Drax’s plan was to congregate his new master race in a space station and then return them later to his new earth.
We all know the rest of the story: James Bond foils the plot, saves the day in a stellar outer space fight with laser guns, and gets the girl. And even the character Jaws realizes that he is not part of the master plan, and turns against Drax.
Now, this all sounds really cool, and of all the Roger Moore James Bond films, this was my favorite, although Sean Connery is top dog, with Daniel Craig close second. But, the crux of this missive is not about James Bond characters, it is all about the concept of developing a master race.
We have been there before: the great scourge of the 20th century was the idea of the “ubermensch,” the superior master race. This was the dream of Adolf Hitler: the Aryan race superiority, his Third Reich. It was the reason Hitler refused to congratulate Jesse Owens on his stupendous achievements during the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin. And it was the reason Hitler and the Nazis enacted their “final solution,” the deliberate extermination of an entire race of people, the Jewish people, that they deemed inferior. It was the reason why we should never forget names like Josef Mengele, the infamous “Doctor of Death” who demonically conducted experiments on humans seeking to isolate perfections in the human race, and condemned many to their deaths in gas chambers, at concentration camps, more appropriately death camps.
This is why I am concerned about some European nations today openly using the murdering of unborn babies as a means to seek out the perfect child. Of course, here in America, folks have been very adept at using desensitizing language such as “abortion” and “women’s right to choose,” but the end result is the same: the heinous murder of an unborn child, God’s perfect gift of life.
Maybe that was the underlying message from the film “Moonraker,” to alert us to the dangers, the abject peril, of someone devising a plan to create the perfect race, people. Sadly, it appears that we have not heeded that message, that warning.
As reported by the Daily Mail:
“A scientist claims to have helped create the world’s first genetically-modified humans during laboratory work in China.
The DNA of twin girls was altered with a powerful new tool capable of rewriting the very blueprint of life, Chinese researcher Dr. He Jiankui says.
He claims the babies, named LuLu and Nana, were born a few weeks ago and have a resistance to infection with HIV, the AIDS virus.
A US scientist said he took part in the work in China, but this kind of gene editing is banned in the United States due to risks that altered DNA will warp other genes.
These potentially dangerous changes may then be passed down to future generations.
Gene editing is banned in Britain, the US many other parts of the world, and researchers said that, if Dr. He’s claims are true, the ‘monstrous’ experiment was ‘not morally or ethically defensible.’
Dr. Jiankui, of the Southern University of Science and Technology, in Shenzhen, said he altered embryos for seven couples during fertility treatments, with one pregnancy resulting thus far.
He said his goal was not to cure or prevent an inherited disease but to try to bestow a trait that few people naturally have – an ability to resist infection with HIV.
He said the parents involved declined to be identified or interviewed, and would not say where they live or where the work was done.
There is no independent confirmation of Dr. He’s claim, and it has not been published in a journal, where it would be vetted by other experts.”
We are humans, and we are not perfect, we were not intended to be. However, we are perfectly conceived. Dr. He’s assertion should trouble us all, and the fact that it happened, was allowed, in China is even more disconcerting. There must remain some sense of morality and medical ethics, and perhaps this should be one of the issues discussed with China’s “Dictator for Life,” Xi Jinping. Yes, the other issues of intellectual theft and forced transfers of technology are key issues, but to me, this represents something even more diabolical in its nature. The hard question that needs to be asked of President Xi is whether or not he and the Chinese government approves of such an experiment. The answer will be very telling.
China is a country that is pursuing massive, global, hegemonic expansion, that is not debatable. China is a very repressive communist country that denies the most basic of individual rights and liberties. It has sought to subjugate the indomitable individual spirit to a collective ideological domination, the essence of socialism: communism. China has taken its economic growth and in turn used it to expand it military ambitions, not to improve the lives of its citizens.
And, now, it appears that China is in pursuit of making the perfect, master race. We all know about their inhumane policy towards children.
We must learn the lessons from the early 1930s and the rise of the same theory, belief, in what became Nazi, National Socialist, Germany. We can ill afford to not heed the lessons of history. What is happening in China is highly disturbing, as we pointed out in a post this past Saturday. But this endeavor, if actually done, to genetically engineer human embryos, is a threat to us all.
The movie “Moonraker” was a fiction, there is no James Bond or a Hugo Drax. But could it be that art was imitating life? We have encountered those whose quest was to create a master race before . . . is it déjà vu all over again, as Yogi Berra would say?
